Educate me here. Hodgdon offers more than a dozen different propellants for reloading 223/5.56 ammo. I have used h322 in the ,223 rem with real good results.I used the hornady 68 grain match bullets though. Burn rates range from IMR 4198 (fastest) to CFE 223 (slowest). I am loading 21.8 grains of H322 if that matters in this conversation. I settled initially on H322 as it gave a good combo of performance and muzzle blast. He used Linotype metal and the casting weight is 55 gr. My desires for this are a powder that has a good balance of velocity and cost per round, something that would meter well in a progressive press and something that is relatively clean. The Sierra load data shows the COAL at 2.26, but the bolt face to barrel entrance measures 2.39. H322 charges in grains: 21, 21.5, 22, 22.5, 23 The chrony basically showed the same velocity spread from over 2900 to about 3150. I am stuck with Hodgdon H322 powder for the next 200 rounds or so. be sure to compare apples with apples....i.e. I did extensive load development w/ the first barrel, incl H4895, H335, H322, WW748, VarGet, RL12, RL15, VV130, AA2015BR, AA2230, and AA2460. My main use w/ the 223 is prairie dog hunts so muzzle blast is a legitimate concern for me. Is this something normal? One of the best powders is in my opinion is BLC_2 or H335 if you aren't shooting in high temps . handloads, and faster-burning powders like HP38 and Trail Boss can be used for low-velocity specialty loads. He has used 23 grains of H322 powder. Of note, the upper right load, labeled "test" is probably the best all around load I have ever found in 5.56. my particular rifle, the CZ 527 in .223, like all H335 loads it tried, 23, 24 and 25 grains. I don't recommend H322 for 223, you can do better with Benchmark, or various other, slightly slower burning powders. A gas check was not used due to lack of availability of correct gas checks. exact same bullet type and weight (within .2 grains)...same brass and suggested load (at max) for all powders. I was shooting a Mini-14 with an 18 inch barrel at the time and so ended up settling on a 60 grain Soft or Hollow point bullet over either IMR-4198, IMR-3031 or WW748. Trying some new target bullets out 100 Yards for load development. Years ago when I started loading .223 Remington, I worked up loads using the powders that were available to me at the time. I shot it here for control group. I cant list all the powders because there are to many like CF223,8208 etc. It appears that load will fire at about 3000 fps. I've had great results from 40gr - 62 grain various bullets using Vhit N 135 / N140 CFE 223. I plan on using CFE223 for my "good" loads but am looking at Hogdgen H335 or H322 for target practice. My store only had 55gr projectiles (Combined Technologies Ballistic Silver Tips =black moly ones). I have a friend who has loaded several 223 rounds using an RCBS mold. ... Anybody have any experience loading this round, and if so what COAL did you use? I'm looking to get powder for a 55gr 223 plinking load. I thought with the velocity being nearly the same, the grouping would be similar. Does anybody have a .223 55gr load they can share. No group was very good with nearly 4 inch groups for each load. This is a pretty stark difference.
